"Sometimes just talking isn't enough. "Total healing" implies a comprehensive experience. For survivors of sexual assault - an assault on the mind, body and soul-traditional "talk therapy" is often only the beginning. Therapists have begun studying and employing physical activity as a path to healing the mind. The Joyful Heart Foundation is committed to the total healing and recovery of survivors of rape and sexual assault by introducing the ground-breaking world of dolphin-human therapy in the wild. By working hand-in-hand with rape crisis centers and counselors as well as dolphin experts, we synthesize all components of the healing process (mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental) into one therapeutic experience. The positive effects of human-dolphin interaction in the wild are unparalleled. The Joyful Heart Foundation is dedicated to introducing this type of therapy to survivors of sexual assault and rape. We provide this safe, unique and liberating therapy in conjunction with more traditional forms of therapy, free of charge. The Joyful Heart Foundation is a powerful step in a survivor's journey to reclaiming a joyful heart." -joyfulheartfoundation.org
Olivia Benson is a detective with the special victims unit on Law & Order: SVU. The actress who plays her, Mariska Hargitay, is involved with the rehabilitation of rape victims as well. She is the co-founder of The Joyful Heart Foundation, which works to help rape and sexual assault victims heal in mind, body, and spirit.
Mariska is a wonderful actress and I admire her efforts with this foundation, so I created this community. If you are a fan of SVU, Olivia Benson, Mariska Hargitay, or the Joyful Heart foundation, then feel free to join.
From the JHF website: "Mariska Hargitay headlines the crime drama "Law And Order: Special Victims Unit" as the unit's veteran detective, Olivia Benson. In the freshman season of the series, Mariska earned nominations from the Viewers for Quality Television for Best Actress, from the TV Guide Awards for Favorite Actress in a New Series and from the International Press Academy for Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series.
Her impressive television and film credits, which span more than a decade, speak to her talent and determination as an actress. Her dedication to providing assistance to sexual assault and domestic violence survivors speaks to her depth of character and generosity of spirit. Committed to ending sexual violence and caring for those who have survived it, Mariska spends as much time on screen dealing with these crimes as she does off.
Mariska fell in love with the wild dolphins in the waters off the Kona Coast in 1998 during her first visit. On a whim, she booked herself a spot on the "Into Spirit" tour. That day, she had what she can only describe as a "heart opening." The Joyful Heart Foundation was born that day, the spiritual and philanthropic child of Mariska and Lisa Denning. She knew immediately that the powerful, inspiring experience she had with the dolphins needed to be shared. The lesson she learned about trusting was too important to keep to herself. Since then, she has devoted her time, resources and voice to helping others find the joy, peace and liberation this experience brings.
Mariska splits her time between New York City and Los Angeles. Apart from acting and volunteering, she also enjoys yoga, spending time with her friends and family, and daydreaming in her garden."
